Dragon Pokemon by DragonlordRynn Dragon Pokemon by DragonlordRynn
“Pokemon can be classified by following criteria: A low reproduction rate (with the offspring being in most cases of its mother’s species), supernatural abilities like extended longevity (in some cases, as seen in the so-called ‘Legendary Pokemon’, it exceeds several thousand years), the ability to control different elements, large-sized bodies, a sudden second and third mutation/maturity stage, some of which are triggered by the radiation of different ores (and a newly-discovered fourth stage, the ‘Mega-Evolution’ which is triggered by ‘Mega Stones’), and near-human/superhuman intellect, even in animals like arthropods. It was generally believed that Pokemon where a whole different act of Creation, or even extraterrestrial life-forms. In 1850 however, when a female West-Highland Terrier gave birth to a litter of Lillipups, people began to realize that Pokemon did come, in fact, from normal animals. This caused several theories to spring up until in 1976 the young Pokemon Professor Samuel Oak discovered a virus in one of his samples. First, he believed it to be a contamination, but then curiosity got the better of him. He noted a section in the virus’ DNA he found oddly familiar. In a sample of his Charizard’s DNA, he recognized the exact same section of viral DNA. This lead to a breakthrough in Pokemon research, explaining exactly where Pokemon came from: The ‘Pokerus’ Virus affects the reproductive organs, slipping its genetic information into its hosts gametes and changing the offspring to mutate into Pokemon.”

Dragons do not belong to only one family of Pokemon. There are many different families that dragons descended from, like amphibians, reptiles, dinosaurs, therapsides and different kind of birds. Most authors choose to describe dragons by following criteria: At least six limbs (with at least one pair having a different function), the ability to fly or hover, scales or feathers. There are exceptions to this rule, so most people simply go by 'Big scaley and scary, must be a dragon.'

Eh...I didn't want to rip the family apart, you know? And with Dusk Mane having six limbs and Dawn Wing looking more like a monster than a flying dog, I decided to put them into dragons.

Ah ok👍🏻 but are Poipole and Naganadel the same species? Because Poipole look like a lizard and Naganadel a Pterodactyl

But they are both reptilian. However, like many fish, Poipole does a really harsh growth spurt as it grows- its crest vanishes, its arms turn into wings and its tail thickens.

Could you please explain how Necrozma and its forms work in your headcanon?
Reply
:icondragonlordrynn:
DragonlordRynn Featured By Owner 4 days ago
In its basic, Necrozma reproduces by infecting Cosmog. Cosmog will then grow into Cosmeon, and eventually into Solgaleo/Lunala. And then, at some point in its life, the Necrozma strain will suddenly kick in and mutate its host until it becomes Necrozma. This critter eats its way through the world until it grows into Ultra Necrozma.

So something like what Wasps do to Caterpillars?

:icondragonlordrynn:

Almost. Only, the wasps will hatch from the caterpillar- while Solgaleo/Lunala turn into Necrozma

So, sorta... It's more like a Xenomoprh thing now that I think about it, or how some viruses use the Gentic material of others to make a body for themselves

On which animals are giratina, Hydreigon, guzzlord and Hoopa based on

None. After doing 400+ Pokémon, I was secure enough to draw animals without much reference. Giratina is partially sauropod, tortoise and bat, Giratina origin is mostly whale and snake, Hydreigon is dragon and bird, guzzlord is actually partly bullhorn frog (but only a little) and hoopy is just something I mixed up. Mostly dragon.

Not a real Dragon, but I used the 'Scavenger' enemy from the Drakan game series as model. Since this guy has no real equivalent in the real world, I had no choice but to place it under dragons.

I remember a joke designation that someone gave Black Kyurem, Druddigon, and Kommo'o (not in this picture, featured in "Dinosaurs"); it was Gorilla Arm Dragons, or GAD for short. It kinda made sense, given their arm to body length ratio.

Really? Well, Kyurem is a T-Rex Dragon, Zekrom is  a mixture from different dinosaurs (making Black Kyurem one too). Druddigon is an Allosaurus, and Kommo-o is a Therizinosaurus.

Lugia used to be in the bird category once and I think he should stay because even Blaziken is not a real bird (he is a kind of feathered bird like dinosaur) and also lugia has a beak, two legs and two wings ( not like the regular dragons) so he should be with the birds

:icondragonlordrynn:

Yeah, but unlike Blaziken who actually looks like a bird (especially with the teethless beak and the short tail), Lugia does kind of look more like a dragon with its talons, fangs and long reptilian beak.

Let's just agree that Lugia is a middle thing between birds and dragons, and Blaziken is a middle thing between dinosaurs and birds, okay?

Nice concepts. I was browsing around to find references for a plant-dragon hybrid when I stumbled into this. It's really sweet that you have designs for all the Pokemon. At least I think you did.

Neither are Trapinch, Hoopa, Lugia...
This picture does not only contain Dragon 'Type', but rather those Classified as Dragons. Dragons usually are too different from their relatives to belong into their category, like having six or more limbs while still being vertebrates, or are just plain scary. (Dragons=Six limbs or more with at least one pair of limbs having a different function than the others). So in that case, Charizard is very well a dragon, even when not Dragon Type /and Mega Charizard X IS a dragon)

Charmander and family also don't look like lizards, but dinosaurs.

The Point is- I classified them as Dragons and placed them in the Dragon Category. You don't like it, you do one yourself.

Neither are Charmander, Charmeleon, Trapinch, Trapinch, Hoopa or Necrozma.

The 'Dragon Category' does not equal to the 'Dragon Type'. It goes often together, but the category 'Dragons' is described as 'Vertebrates, often reptilian, that have more than two pair of limbs with one pair often having a different function than the others.'
The common description for dragon is: Big, scaly, scary and can fly. There are also bird-originating dragons (not only reptilian or dinosaurian), or amphibians.
