Bird Pokemon by DragonlordRynn Bird Pokemon by DragonlordRynn
“Pokemon can be classified by following criteria: A low reproduction rate (with the offspring being in most cases of its mother’s species), supernatural abilities like extended longevity (in some cases, as seen in the so-called ‘Legendary Pokemon’, it exceeds several thousand years), the ability to control different elements, large-sized bodies, a sudden second and third mutation/maturity stage, some of which are triggered by the radiation of different ores (and a newly-discovered fourth stage, the ‘Mega-Evolution’ which is triggered by ‘Mega Stones’), and near-human/superhuman intellect, even in animals like arthropods. It was generally believed that Pokemon where a whole different act of Creation, or even extraterrestrial life-forms.

In 1850 however, when a female West-Highland Terrier gave birth to a litter of Lillipups, people began to realize that Pokemon did come, in fact, from normal animals. This caused several theories to spring up until in 1976 the young Pokemon Professor Samuel Oak discovered a virus in one of his samples. First, he believed it to be a contamination, but then curiosity got the better of him. He noted a section in the virus’ DNA he found oddly familiar. In a sample of his Charizard’s DNA, he recognized the exact same section of viral DNA. This lead to a breakthrough in Pokemon research, explaining exactly where Pokemon came from: The ‘Pokerus’ Virus affects the reproductive organs, slipping its genetic information into its hosts gametes and changing the offspring to mutate into Pokemon.”

Warning! Big File ahead!

Bird Pokémon are amongst the most unique and beautiful Pokémon in the world. Many so-called Legendary Pokémon are birds. Birds come in every shape and coloration, and most of the larger ones have been worshipped as the embodiements of gods. Several bird Pokémon also have additional fingers and claws at their wings, the reason why is not known.

December 3rd, 2016: Updated the file with new art.
They inlcude now: Ho-Oh, Yveltal, Sigilyph, Natu, Xatu, Vullaby, Mandibuzz, Rufflet, Braviary, Pidgey, Pidgeotto, Pidgeot, Mega Pidgeot, Starly, Staravia, Staraptor, Fletchling, Fletchinder, Talonflame, Articuno, Rowlet, Dartrix, Decidueye, Hoothoot, Noctowl, Shuppet, Banette, Mega Banette, Yamask, Cofgagrius, Duskull, Dusclops, Dusknoir, Pawniard, Bisharp, Seedot, Nuzleaf, Shiftry, Pikipek, Trumbeak, Toucannon, Cottonee, Murkrow, Honchkrow, Oricorio, Zapdos, Togepi, Togetic, Togekiss, Misdreavus, Mismagius, Baltoy, Claydol, Taillow, Swellow, Spearow, Fearow, Skarmory, Lavados, Celesteela, Wingull, Pelipper,  Ducklett, Swanna, Farfetch'd, Cresselia, Porygon, Porygon 2, Porygon Z, Tornadus Therian Forme, Tapu Koko, Swablu, Altaria, Mega Altaria, Pidove, Tranquill, Unfezant, Nosepass, Probopass, Hawlucha, Chatot, Wynaut, Wobbufet, Delibird, Piplup, Prinplup, Empoleon, Doduo, Dodrio, Spritzee, Armoatiss, Torchic, Combusken, Blaziken, Mega Blaziken

Notes:
-Porygon is an artificial Pokémon that suddenly changed its appearance and gained more sentiency.
-Blaziken isn't actually a real bird, as they haven't evolved from a common ancestor. In fact, Blaziken has evolved a stage before Archaeopteryx, so it is closer to dinosaurs than birds. But since Blaziken is very bird-like and not very dinosaur-like, it is here.
-Bisharp and Pawniard have evolved from owls, though they have lost their ability to fly and gained a clawed wing instead.
-A lot of large ghost-types are owl Pokémon, in fact. Because they sit in the dark and watch people pass  by they were believed to be grave guardians or ghosts.
-Farfetch'd can not learn Surf. This doesn't make any sense, because this stupid duck was clearly swimming in the anime.

PLEASE NOTE: This is how I see the Pokemon. It is fine to be of different opinion, but please tolerate mine.

So the Torchic family is a transitional species between birds and dinosaurs, right?

:icondragonlordrynn:
DragonlordRynn Featured By Owner Jul 3, 2017
Not really. They evolved from the same ancestor as birds did, but their ancestors already split up before the Archeopteryx. Blaziken is actually more of a bird-like dinosaur, than a real bird.

Wow! I am very impressed by this!

I love how you appropriately matched each bird type with their reality bird counterparts!

You've even managed to turn none bird type Pokemon into birds quite effectively well! Like that Cofagrigus, god dang that Cofagrigus!

Your bird anatomy is also equally impressive!
Isn't it great where we live in a time where we can simply google all the references we want? It's no wonder art has been flourishing generation after generation!

I will admit that I do find some realistic Pokemon weird and at times frightening. But this! No. I can only think of words like Beautiful, and Majestic!

I designed Oricorio after real-life birds of paradise (I made mine a mixture between honey birds and birds of paradise), so the left-most brown bird is a female Oricorio

How *fantastic*, is this piece!!!  I absolutely *adored* how you brought Togepi & Togekiss into this artwork! ^___^ So, so great!!

When I saw your Farfetch'd, I think my mind first triggered a memory of Psyduck- who I went looking for but then couldn't locate- & when I looked at it again, I saw the signature black marking on the head.

Can I tell you, these are *beautiful* in the many ways you've captured animals' natural gestures & behavior, then outfitted them with these pokemon styles & colors. ...I was *looking* for this kind of artwork, in searches, & could not find it-- I only happened across this piece today!! (Sooo lucky!!)

Wow, just... Thank you for these gorgeous depictions. I'll be checking out your gallery some more from here-- thank you for sharing what you do!!!
